My Biggest Challenge so far

As you may know I have recently been able to do a bit of lace, the piece in one of the previous posts actually didn't work out... Do you know why? The amount of sts weren't adding up.

I'm a little bit fussy with making sure that sts stay uniform all the way through a knitted piece and so when I found that I was consistently getting 2 sts more, I had to take a step back and re-access.

So I started with breaking down the pattern into blocks, I worked 4 rows, re-counted... I continued to do this and found that although I was following the pattern exactly, I started realising that it was the initial number of sts that was wrong from the start. The pattern I worked with actually should have formed over 9 sts... I was doing it over an even number and so obviously it wasn't working out. I then gave up on that piece and considered it to be a learning curve. So with that being said, I started another lace piece. So far, this one is adding up and I'm not ending up with more sts than I should.

It was a very frustrating time to say the least, but I have learned to think about 2 things...

The start up amount and how many sts actually form the repetitive pattern...if I make sure I have enough sts for each consecutive pattern, multiply that by how many times I would like the patterned sts to repeat... cast on that many stitches and adding 1 more stitch for the end st to be a knit sts. in theory this should work out. I will re-try it with the new calculations and see how it goes.

As I work through the difficulties of getting a lace pattern to work, I will continue to show you my progress.

When things get a little difficult with a pattern and it really doesn't work out, I put it down and work on an existing project that I'm doing to give myself the little bit of confidence. The project I picked up was the moss stitch scarf that I'm working on intermittently...

So that should help stave off any feelings of failure. One thing to note is; Knitting is a continuous learning curve, but once you've mastered the basics... it becomes like second nature. I hope that those of you that are having difficulties with particular patterns won't give up... re-access.... re-adjust... it will work eventually, just have to keep trying... I hope to see you all again soon... Have a great day.
